Lazyman Sambal Kangkong

Yes.. I am lazy... but I can't help it.. I m so busy at work..

I was intrigued by this sauce packet when C flashed it in front of me. Haha it was advertised as a sauce mix for fried rice but at the bottom right u can vaguely see that it can also be used as a sambal kangkong stir fry too.. Amazing...

It does fare well on the taste front...and I got a good kick out of frying it in my new gigantic stir fry wok that mom bought for me.

The only issue I have was that the vegetables cooled so quickly that it lost its flavour soon after reaching the table.. Haiz..

Do I care? nah..... Jia pui Oh!

4 Vegetable Dish!

You know how most eateries have their homemade special "whatever" dish.. Well... Aa's got one for our flat too. Its called the special 4 vegetable dish. Its so special because we don't even know what the 4 vegetables are. I am guessing its mushroom, tofu, cabbage and garlic?

Anyway its one of those dishes where u throw together what you have in the fridge and hope it turns out right. After tasting it, I must say it tasted better than right. It was ALL RIGHT!!!.

Along with the vegetables, Aa made a superior dried scallop oyster sauce to drizzle over the vegetables.

I'll give 2 thumbs up for this dish. One for its tastiness and the other for the healthy "4 vegetable" factor. LOL

Vegetables are so expensive!!!!

All these vegetables cost 2.75 pounds. How is that possible man!!!!. .. Honestly, if veggies are going to be so expensive how do you expect people to maintain 5 portions of fruits/vegetables a day. I really should have bought them from cheapo iceland or tesco and not from "atas" roots and fruits..

My mistake... then again they tasted really good . especially the tomatos.. (P.S: I don like to eat raw/semi cooked tomatos but these were great)

Dinner at Big G's

I was invited over to Big G's place for dinner yesterday. First time in 5 years that I have managed to make my way to this big guy's bachelor hideout. His mum had marinated some chicken in the morning before leaving the house for work so all his sis had to do was pop it in the oven. I was amazed at the nicely roasted colours of the chicken that does not normally happen when I roast my chickens. Chicken drumsticks are my favourite parts of the chicken so BIg G kindly gave me 2 drums and 1 additional breast. Wah... overload man. I am guessing the marinate consisted of garlic and an oregon herb mix. Yummy.

ON top of the chicken we had some vegetables which Big G cooked and additional sausages to fill up any more empty spaces in the stomach. I was so full and now I know why Big G is so BIG!!!. (read not fat --> but BIG!!!)

Finally, my contribution. A Bramley appie pie from marks and sparks. Taste GooooOOODDD..

Dinner at China Blue

A long post deserves a more lengthy story. Its 130pm now so I'll rush through a bit of stuff. Firstly, its the first post with more than 1 picture in it which means my ordinary flickr acct is going to burst its limit pretty soon. 2ndly its the first restaurant meal that I am posting. 3rdly, I had the company of a fantastic group of friends consisting of, WY, YR, M, Aa, C, K and Py.

A little history on China Blue passed down through generations of seniors who have survived on it as a weekend staple. Originally known as Blue Ginger located along Sauchiehall street, this little restaurant famous for its Malacca Seafood (Ma Liu Jia hai xian) has undergone numerous changes to become known as China Blue on Renfrew Street today (Next to KFC).

So the first dish here is yam ring (Fad Pu or something along those lines in Cantonese) filled with the Malacca Seafood. Aa has been craving for this dish in a very long time and having been dissapointed umpteen times in other restaurants, he finally has his wish. I found the yam to be really nicely deepfried. It wasn't as salty as i hoped it to be, afterall yam is really bland. Maybe its because the saltiness from the malacca seafood was meant to compliment it but unfortunately it failed on its part. Overall I say this dish was a nice change from the usual dishes that we always order. I am looking forward to trying it again.

You must be wondering what is this bloody red dish. Well its sweet and sour pork. SSP here is not like what you can get in Singapore. I believe this is a bit of a HK and Glaswegian Fusion which is notoriously infused with malt vinegar (yucks). The souriness is meant to come from pineapple and some chinese vinegar not malt vinegar.... Fortunately, the chef probably knew we were chinese so he tuned his dish towards our palates. It was a pretty tasty dish despite its looks. The best part was the meat was tender and the sauce although qutie wet wasn't overpowering.

This dish requires little explaination. Kangkong stirfried with sambal blachan. Nice with a bowl of rice. I wish there was more blachan and sambal flavour. Other than that, still a good dish.

This is called Thai Shi Ji aka Thai Style Chiken. Haha quite a stylo name right but its basically KFC spice powdered chicken topped with cool cucumber and a sweet thai like sauce. Not too bad la, fried chicken always taste good. Definately recommend it to anyone who comes to China Blue.

Claypot Tofu with Mince Pork. Hmm yummy. Nice with a hot bowl of rice. Actually, this statement is so cliche but I doubt you can eat it on its own. Its just too salty. yeah... Best eaten with a bowl of Rice.

Finally, save the best for the last. Or least what I thought was best. To be honest, I wasn't sure what was the best dish of the night for me. I was thinking it could be the yam because it was the first time that we were all eating it but it din't hit the spot for me or it would have clinch my due praise. This fish, I don't know what fish it is but i am assuming it was a sea bass. It was pretty large compared to what i got from the fish monger. Tasted fresh and the sauce was much better than what I make at home. If you look at it, its much darker in colour and taste wise it was more flavoursome and of the right salty-sweetness. Well it definately worked for me.

Besides these dishes we also had a starter soup and some red bean soup dessert complimentary of the restaurant. The best part was they gave us a 20% discount card that can be used till they decide it expires. Looks like we will be coming back soon.

Alright its really late now and i need to sleep. Please ignore my spelling errors for now.
HOpe you enjoyed the post. Good night

Salad on a Sunny Day

IMG_7264, originally uploaded by jiapui.

The weather's great today. The sun was shining and the winds weren't blowing at all and the best part, I got a half day.

This salad is beautiful and it made me feel a subtle coolness just by looking at it. Unfortunately, i don like rockets. Its a tat too pepper for my taste buds.

But for those who are interested, here's the ingredient list,

- Bunch of rockets
- handful of cherry tomatos
- 2 chopped sundried tomatos
- half a green pepper & half a stalk of celery
- drizzle of balsamic vinegar
- drizzle of olive oil

Serves approx 2 small portions.

Dishes from a mum

IMG_7110, originally uploaded by jiapui.

C's mum was up to stay for a week and it was really nice of her to cook dinner for us one night. She used one of C's Thai chicken mix (Asian Gourmet) to bake some chicken and prepared a nice green vege dish using FRESH vegetables. Wow. it was one of the heartiesh food I've had in a long time. It taste good and a mum's touch made it better.

Roast Pork again!!

Haha. See what i mean when I say Aa likes to eat roast pork.. Well this time round he's bought Tesco's finest pork belly. I must say it tasted really nice and leave us craving for more.

I love this. its so healthily green. Makes you feel good just looking at it.
I believe Aa boiled some broccoli some green beans, throw in some green pesto and olive oil and walnuts. Top it up with shaved parmegianno again.

* its ok to use frozen veges. Fresh vegetables definately are of a better quality.

Roasted Chicken

Juicy chicken that I got from Sainsbury for 4 pounds.
A good size chicken that fed 3 of us.
No frills. Unwarp the chicken. Fire up the oven to 180 degrees
and throw the chicken in for an hour.
Rest for 10 mins before carving.

I am terrible with salads. Trust me its either too much oil dressing or a heap of vegetables. Basically it dosen't look good nor taste good.
Fortunately, Aa is an expert with salads.
A handful of cabbage, spinach and some leafy greens topped with some knife shaved parmagianno cheese.
and you've got a salad to pair with the chicken.

One of our favourite items in the flat. You can get a nice bag of wedges or curly fries to share among 3 people or 4 even.
Simply lay them out on a tray and pop it into the oven for 15 mins at 220 degrees. If you want them crispier, take them out half way and give them a toss so they all cook evenly.
Fries, mayonise and ketchup. YUM!
