Happy CNY 2012 !!!

Back in Singapore after a week's long receiving and what better ways to celebrate other than to be able to spend some good quality time with my family and relatives over a reunion feast. I reckon this is my 3rd time back during the Chinese new year period but only the 2nd time actually being at the reunion dinner table.

031

My Dad's a strong traditionalist who firmly believes in reunion dinners taking place at home rather than at restaurants. So much so I don't recall ever having any dinners at a restaurant on Chinese New Year's Eve.

This year's dinner was to take place at my 3rd Uncle's place. Back in the good old days when Ah ma was around, dinner always took place at my house. Over the last decade, we have started rotating around the different households.

My 3rd Aunt is into her natural flavours when it comes to cooking and focuses on presentation as part of accentuating the chow down experience. Also being a whole zodiac cycle younger than my mum, her choice of ingredients are much more adventurous and modern.

003

The amount of preparation that goes into a CNY dinner cannot be taken lightly. Besides the considering the quantity, you need to think about catering to the different generations as well. In the past, it used to be more difficult with my little cousins (The Macdonald's Generation) being small and not liking the more blend par boiled steamboat ingredients. They much prefer deep fried stuff and ketchup haha. Now that they are older, they seem less interested with the deep fried morsels. I, on the other hand, just eat everything cos I am deprieved haha.

013

In contrast to the kiddies, my Uncles and Aunts much prefer their fishes. More on white rabbit fishes in another post but without fail, this prized item always squeezes itself onto the table. Being Teochew and liking fish is one thing but being in a family where your grandfather used to be a fisherman and having a Dad who travels all the way to Sembawang to buy fish at 4am on CNY day1 really says something about how much this family like their oceanic swimmers.

025

There is not limit to the variety of ingredients that you have. I am not even going to compare with Seoul garden but I am sure every family have their favourite items that they would like to have on their table. Its like going to CHina blue in Glasgow and ordering the same dishes every time -_- hahaha.

Prawns, pork, chicken, sea cucumber, fish maw, fish ball..... the list goes on and on .

016-2

I found this platter of cooked ingredients rather interesting. Reminds me of the cold appetiser / deli section in a Western buffet. Anyway, starting at the top and going clockwise, cold pork belly with crisp garlic, right century egg with ginger slices, abalone, cuttlefish, spicy bah kwa, Cherry TOMATO??? and in the centre, preserved spring onion bulbs ?

060-2

Huat AH !!!

Post Dinner activities heh heh heh.

Yauatcha - London Musings Part 1

106

Mum says there's always a first time for everything. When it comes to food she will say "try if don like don eat." Haha, the rebellious little me at that time obviously turned a deaf ear. Nowadays, I realised that she dosen't walk the talk herself when I ask her to try some food. haha

So...... My First Michelin Star. (I checked the dictionary to make sure I got it rite). My first ONE star restaurant dining experience. Guess what at a DIM SUM RESTAURANT !!!! -__-" Seriously?
I totally didn't expect it but WY insisted that we check it out. Can't be help, I was too hungry to convince him to head to a cheaper china town alternative where I could probably eat twice as much for half the price.
Then again.... a michelin star restaurant.... A Michelin star DIM summm Restaurant.. hmmm... I wonder ... I wonder

119

I couldnt figure out what to order . Siu Mai Har gao? my mind just couldnt come to terms with ordering something so casual. i wanted to be blown away by some creative dim sum. It was a Michelin star restaurant afterall.

Let's just say we started with the congee. Quite arty fartsy eh? Simple pork congee but met all expectations.

126

I just had to satisfy my curiosity of a michelin star siu mai. Can you see the scallop? and instead of crab roe they have used Tobiko
Nice ! and just enough for me to be impressed.
What was more impressive was how the European waiter was able to repeat all our orders in almost perfect cantonese

130

Again to satisfy my curiosity. This was somewhat underwhelming. It was nothing out of the ordinary. Ok... I have to give them credit for using a piece of banana leaf instead of cheapo wax paper for plating.

151

Wy highly recommended the venison char siew su. Ah ha . A touch of "atahness" using venison instead of charsiew. The verdict: tasted almost like a charsiew su with the marinate dominating most of the flavours. The gaminess of the venison was just enough to permeate through the sweet flavours. Maybe thats the whole idea.

140

I can't remember what these were called but its char siew on the inside wrapped around by a crust that tasted like the top crust of bo lo bao. It was super yummy. The crust might even contain some baby powder. Very clever dish and one of my favourites that afternoon.

136

Jasmine Smoked ribs. Ok only..... better off drinking jasmine tea and eating charsiew pork ribs.

121

Roasted duck Pumpkin puff. This for me represents what Michelin dim sum is about. Creative use of ingredients you least expect in the creation of a delectable dim sum that is pleasant to the eye and on the palate. *

I may go back again but with so many other Michelin star restaurants and better cheaper chinese restaurants, this restaurant wont be on my return list anytime soon
Nevertheless, a "palette" opener that one needs to TRY at least once hahah

Lao Bei Jing, Velocity

I am glad to say I din't go to DTF for LM XLM (p.s I m a medic and I like acronyms) this time for my little meat dumpling fix. That does not mean I m not going to eat them.. HOw can I not?

Met some friends at Lao bei Jing . Northern Chinese cuisine operated by the Tung Lok Group. Should be not bad la.

Yum Yum.. .. Based on one tray, the verdict is that the XLB here are less salty more sweet, has equal amount of soup and maybe not folded as neatly as the the DTF versions. The ginger here is also less re finely cut.

Its the side dishes which really entice me since they are all new. Here's the Bao's with a scorched bottom... OK thats not its original name.. The real name is

The guotie, jiao zi were so so only.

This is the super duper yummy Beijing Chao mien. Its super yummy la u know like those yee mee that u get at wedding banquets?. ONly this version was well salted and smoked with the wok hei flavour. And its got this delicate splash of gravy enough to make it a wet fried noodle. wah dmam good... JUST ORDER IT !!!!!

Lunch at DTF XLB

Its almost like a ritual. For the past few times that I have been back, we have never missed a visit to Ding Tai Fung. Don't all of you ?? For me the incentives are there is a restaurant near my place which has seats available normally during lunch hours and most of meals are paid for by Citibank.... lol.. No they are not my sponsors, we merely exchange food vouchers with credit points. heh..

We did try a few new items like the sesame seed bun, chicken soup la mien and the hot and spicy suan la soup. Amongst all, the suan la tang was the best. 6 dollars for a good portion to be shared by 3 people. We even tried the mango pudding dessert (er.... not very nice actually lol).

XLB anyone?

Yummy Food

Its always exciting checking out new restaurants and its even more so when u are visiting a Chinese restaurant.. The last time I reviewed a new Chinese restaurant was after Big G mentioned it to me after bringing his mom out for a mother's day dinner. So this time around when he told me about a new place near see woo, I was pretty psyched up. Together with Aa, we set off to explore this wee restaurant hidden somewhere out there in Maryhill.

The set up inside is pretty basic with enough sitting for I would say 30 people?... It was a promising start to see quite a few chinese folks siting in there having their dinners. I guess we were off to a good start.

The menu is pretty extensive but its nothing new from what you can expect from places like 4 seasons or homewok. Don't expect Malaysian / Singaporean dishes here as it is a predominantly cantonese styled restaurant. Not even sure if I would call it a restaurant given its humble settings. how about eatery?

Aa ordered his favourite bitter gourd and pork rib in black bean sauce. Although I don't share his same keenness for bitter gourd, I found the taste of the dish to be still quite palatable for me. If it was celery instead of bitter gourd, I'll probably have gobbled up the dish much more easily.

I decided to be adventurous too and went for this dish called Pork on the beach.. haha.. ya quite a cheesy name and I was utterly shocked when I saw my dish.... SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE???? My heart sank for a moment but my first mouth full changed my opinion. It wasn't your standard vinegar overloaded sauce but one that had a strong tomato flavour. Phew... The pork cutlet was certainly tender and it was interesting to note the piece of luncheon meat that came along with the dish.

There are still plenty of dishes on the menu to try and I'll come back some other day to give it a shot. Its not going to be my favourite chinese restaurant anytime but it will certainly be one of those that I consider if I ever do need to satisfy my hunger for chinese food.
