GUSS CNY Dinner 2010

Happy Chinese New year!!!. Welcome to the year of the Tiger. ROARRzzz... ... yup... zzzzz I am trying to avoid studying for the next hour or so while my stomach takes of the chicken in my stomach.. Its been another long day of revising. Ok .. So here's what we had for the Chinese New Year dinner organised by GUSS.

First Up, Thick seafood soup. Not bad la. Abit like sharkfin if you imagine hard enough. There were nice bits of scallop in it.

Roasted Duck. Oh this was good. Oily, juicy, fatty. Yum yum yum

Egg toufu dish. Hmm.. The toufus turned out to be quite starchy. *shakes head....

Nian Nian you yu. This really nice fish has made an appearance on the blog umpteen times.

Preserved Vegetables with stewed pork. I was slurping up my rice with the meat. I wasn't craving for it in particular but having not had some really nice chinese food during this period, I was kinda desperate

I thought this was the best dish of the night besdies the dessert. Great combination of sauted scallops with fresh broccoli

Fried beehoon with alot of oILL!.. Some chili belachan and a kalamansi will make this dish perfect.

More veg for the added healthiness.

Dessert was a plate of refreshing mango jelly. I reckon I ate 4 pieces.

Everyone enjoyed themselves especially those who were k-ing away like that was no tomorrow. Well done GUSS.

Paperinos West End

Dinner from some time ago, I think it was C's treat.
.
.
.

Fried Calamari. Didn't have the fresh seafoodish taste of cuttlefish back home but nevertheless tasted fresh. The batter was light and not clogging with dough. The mayo was terrific.

Mozerella Cheesesticks. Yum yum yum. Cheese never tasted so good in chunks. There was a nice tomatoish sauce ( I think it was watered down pesto) which was extremely good as a dip.

Ok here's the dissappointing part. I had prawn spaght. The pasta here always seem to be overdone? What's wrong with making it al dente.? I wonder if it was done to suit the local taste but soft pasta just ain't the right way to treat italian food. The saving grace was that they gave lots of king size prawns.

C had carbonara which tasted amazing but I am not a fan of eating cream pastas in restaurants. Just one of those little eating habits that I have. lol

WY's Takeaway

Once again its the time of the year for homecook takeaway dinners. I remembered cooking last year for the final years and I guess being nice has its rewards. WY randomly offered to make some dinner on Friday. I was half expecting an ang moh dish from Jamie Oliver's cook book but was quite suprised to find rice and 3 dishes.

Included in the box were 2 well marinated soy sauce marinated chicken, some mince pork with eggplant and stir fry lettuce with oyster sauce. All of it was fantastic. Even if it tasted bad I would have said it was good but not this time. Definately worth eating again *hint *hint LOL.

My only complaint was that the rice was a bit dry lol. WY said it was V who cooked the rice but I got a text from V the next morning saying that it was actually WY.. Oh wells...

Tony Macaroni

Dinner with the usual gang. Aa had Crab meat linguini. Aa felt the meat wasn't fresh. Can or live seafood? hmm.. I wonder .

Prawn Rissotto. Rice was well cooked and infused with stock but the prawns were springy and plain.

Check out some of the other food that I took during the pre-white balance days lol

PeriPeri Spice Chicken with Cous Cous

Studying can be boring.. which is why i am here blogging. Dinner from sometime ago. Aa marinated some chicken in a green jalapeno sauce which gave it a very nice peri peri taste. Cooked up some Cous cous. Never thought I'll like cous cous but its quite nice when simmered in a vegetable stock. Boil up some courgettes and carrots and we are off to go.

Gu Desserts (Highly Recommended)

J recommended this dessert to me quite sometime ago and I found it on offer the other day at Tesco for 2 pounds. I assumed its quite an Atas brand since Waitrose sells it as well.

Yup. It was good quality cheesecake in a glass NOT PLASTIC ramekin. Its pretty much like a goldmine cheesecake. I'll definately be making this sometime after my exams. .

Oh and I kept the ramekins.

Happy 2010 !!!!

Happy new year! So fast so fast 2010 has arrived. I am sure everyone has lots of memories to reflect on from the past ten years. 10 years since the the turn of the millenium, when I first started JC and finally... finally!! I am going to graduate well .. again LOL!... Anyway, we can leave that all to one side and focus on the food.

So K decided he wanted Turkey because he had to slog on Christmas day and miss the dinner. Since Aa and C did most of the cooking this time, I guess it was my turn to volunteer and help as well.. Didnt do much, K, XL and WY did most of the stuff.

As you can see above is the giant 5.65kg turkey bought from Sainsbury. We decided to get it before Christmas and freeze it in case we couldn't get one for the new year dinner. Guess what!!! the price of turkey fell by half after Christmas. Stuffings fell by 50% on Boxing day Morning and fell by another 80% that very same afternoon..... -_-"

OK anyway... The turkey was deliciously moist and well seasoned. I am not a big fan of the big bird because they tend to be dry in texture but this bird was fine and the stuff in it was great too. The use of orange blossom honey perfused the bird extremely well added a nice char to it.. Well done K..

I did a tomato pesto baked ORGANIC !!! salmon... I've never bought organic stuff but since it was on sales.. why not. It tasted great hahaaha guess it was due to the freshness more than anything else.

Broccoli, aubergine and cauliflower? gratin. Nice and not over cheesy. Made by K.

WY's potato dish inspired by Jamie Oliver and salvaged by XL. I commented that it tasted like chicken rice and WY pointed out that he added chicken stock to it. Taste great and provided some balance to the turkey.

And there goes the turkey!

.

As usual.. more desserts and here's a christmas log to finish off with some B and J's!

P.s: Congrats K and XL.

Pondoro. Very nice.

For desserts: Strawberries and chocolate

More leftovers for dinner: The HBH tasted better

My plate with mash and salad.

German Christmas Market, Glasgow

Hey All!... I am Still alive despite the snowy weather that has been peppering the quiet streets of byres road. It dosen't snow much over here but this year seems to be a little different. 7 weeks to exams and you can probably guess why I haven't been posting often but I thought I shall take some time off the books and post some pictures from the weekend visit to the German Xmas market at St Enoch's. Gosh its been 2 years i think since i came to this little fair tuck at the south end of Buchanon street.

Well.. Most of these fairs are pretty standard and sell the usual christmasy stuff like artificial snow, xmas lightings, xmas trees, blah blah blah and lotsa candies which kids love.

There we go... a candy shop with lotsa lotsa candies. I used to love these alot especially the cola ones. Not that I don't like them anymore but rather I've found more interesting stuff to eat

Food's the biggest attraction for me at such markets and the main reason why I have come all the way from the comfort of my room to -4 in the open.. brrr...

Goulash and potatos..

Some yummy yummy German sausage. I had one. Super duper oily

And I had another beef burger.

To be honest, the food was ok only and definately was overcharged but it was the novelty of eating out in the cold and doing the whole xmasy activity that made it memorable.

Before we made our way out, we stumbled upon this!!!!!!

A huge candy store selling chooclates and nuts. As you can see they are really overpriced. 8 pieces of grapes for 2 pounds ... hmm... IT WAS WORTH IT... SO GOOD !!!!! I bought a strawberry for C on K's recommendation

Sugar coated nuts. Got Aa a packet.

More yummy ginger bread cookies with sugary frosting

Can't wait for Xmas and the boxing day sales.
