Triad at Banana Leaf Malaysian Chinese Cuisine

Its not often that you have 3 Chinese doing receiving at same time and as my ex-dragon lady consultant (now affectionately known as Auntie Ruth) says, "one... two.... three..... makes a triad isn't it"

This post is dedicated to DC who has been such a joy to work with and so generously bought this meal.

NOW.... Let's Feast !!!

008-2

Best Char Kway Teow in Glasgow. Generous ingredients with noodles seared by the wok master. All it needs is a "solid" chilli to turn up the wok hei flavour..

012-3

Its not going to win trophies in Singapore anytime soon but I will gladly have this 4 days a week if need be. The star is of dish is the chilli which I have forgotten to include in the picture.

023-2

Restaurant grade Nasi Lemak served on banana leaf with condiments included on a seperate dish. Plenty of credits to the pan fried egg with a gooey yolk.. mhmmm mmmhm..

014

Malaysian style curry laksa vermicelli. Totally not the type of laksa I was brought up with.
The curry broth did hit the spot though. Just to compare, there's char siew, fish ball, deep fried wanton in this version whereas Singapore's version has prawns, dried shrimps and tau pok.

028-2

Satay that has been deep fried and not grilled over a char-coal flame. A new take on satay that I probably won't get used to. The peanut sauce was authentic nevertheless.

This has been one of the most satisfying meals I have had. No Michelin stars whatsoever, just comfort food to nourish the soul.

DO check out the main dishes that this restaurant also serves.

Ben & Jerry's Core Series

009-4

It seems to take ages for B & J to come up with new flavours for ice cream. (I am only ranting because I have almost exhausted all the flavours in UK)

Excited I am much, (pardon the yoda grammer) when these 3 new flavours came onto the market.

I have sneakily finished 2 tubs on my own while my flatmates were away and boy were they delicious. Not sure what anti freeze produce they add to the thick gooey core sauce but they were smooth as sauce can be despite freezing away in my freezer.

I am going to be bias here and say they all taste good. Grab them whilst they are still discounted at Tesco !!

Back to ♥ Tribecca Glasgow

On request of Aa, we decided to do brunch at Tribecca.
It was his turn to savour the glorious post night breakfast. Sadly, there's still 4 more nights to go .
The place was empty at 1025am but started to fill up as we approach the 11am mark. No reservations accepted btw.

042-2

Totally love the canopy

048

Aa went for the stacked pancakes which he gave a good thumbs up. Fluffy as one would like them to be.

I went for THE HUDSON: A classic Honey Roast Ham, Tomato & Melted Swiss Cheese Omelette. Served with a generous portion of toast.

Mind you , these omelettes consist of 5 eggs per serving. Be totally WoWed when the UFO-sized plate land on the table. I am sure they use large eggs or ostrich egg of some sort.. (joking..)

I was extremely full by the end of the meal. Managed to stay satiated until dinner time. Certainly makes the 12 pound meal (Medium Mocha included) more value for money

Coleman's Season + Shake: Tried and tested

035

Seeing that there was an offer Coleman's Spicemix (2 packets for 1pounds. normally 1.49 per packet -__-"), I decided I shall continue being lazy at the weekend and throw some chicken in the oven and let the spices do its magic.

Suprisingly tasty despite not having any MSG, Preservatives or Colouring. Perhaps its because there was 8g of salt in each packet.

Anyway.... highly recommended since its on offer now.

Red Onion, Glasgow

We celebrated K's Birthday at the award winning restaurant, Red Onion the other day.
Helmed by John Quigley, the food takes on a casual gourmet influence.

Here's some of the food that we had that night.

015

Seared scallops with chorizo, rocket, plum tomato and Balsamic dressing

017-2

Crayfish, apple and baby gem salad with Marie rose dressing and Melba toast

021

French Onion Soup

030-3

Mixed grill of harrisa loin of lamb, merguez sausage and smoked aubergine with tzatziki and cous cous

033-2

Grilled seabass fillet with risotto Nero, shaved fennel, rocket and confit lemon

047-2

Hot chocolate brownie with honey comb ice-cream

053

Lemon tart with fresh strawberries and crème fraiche

056-2

Crème brulee

The food was intended to be an upmarket reinterpretation of local favourites and should sit comfortably on many of our palettes.
Well priced for the food the that we received.
Look forward to returning back sometime someday.

♥ Tribeca Glasgow

I feel so liberated having finished 7 nights. The thought of just being able to chill throughout the day not having to worry about getting up at 6pm, rush through a microwave dinner and be in for work at 8pm makes me = )

The night crew decided on American Breakfast Cafe, Tribeca, for our post night grub.

*Looking forward to the Huge portions of pancakes, potatos, honey, bread, sausages, eggs lots & lots of eggs !!!!

002

I settled on The Varick!.. My tired brain must have been confused. I went for the French toast instead. To say the least the portions were huge though: a Head of baguette and 2 thick toast soaked in "eggie" batter. The accompanying maple syrup provided much of the needed sugar I had burnt on my last night. I like how it came in a nice Ikea Glass jar. *Gimmicky but I like !

005-2

My friend had the Egg Benedicts on Toasted Seeded Bagel, topped with Smoked Salmon.
He must be hungry. I was barely halfway through my plate and he had finished his.

010

I got to try some of my other friend's Brooklyn. A 3 layer pancake stack with butter and syrup. She was hungry and needed a savoury fix. Hence the Bacon.

You know... I am glad there is some sort of an American Cafe around. I've grew up wondering what it was like having some American breakfast in a cafe sitting amongst a cool gang of friends. The deco (including that Yellow NY Taxi) and all provided a great American feel.
As for the food, I've got a bit of a mix feeling. It looks the part. Larger portions than usual but... the taste didn't blow me away.
*blame it on the tiredness. I think I will be back again just to give it one more shot

Banana Leaf - Malaysia Chinese Cuisine

Once upon a time there was Asia Style and then Rumours came along. As the popularity of Malaysian Cuisine grew, China Blue also set up its lunch time menu to conquer the world of underexplored Malaysian flavours in Glasgow.

Just about a month ago, I found out that the Old Canton restaurant had revamped into Banana Leaf. Essentially, the very same restaurant but now improvised with a new leafy green deco, friendly staff who bring Malaysian hospitality and awesome AWESOME food.

041

I have had alot of 3 meat roast in Glasgow; most of them in the bigger Chinese restaurants. To find such an amazing platter of roast in this establishment, makes me wonder who is the masterchef helming the kitchen. The duck was juicy, the skin was crisp, the pork was tender yet still retaining that crackling good skin and the charsiew .... wow... reminds me of home haha.
(sounds like I am over selling it but I really really liked it !!)

043

Kam Heong Chicken has the flavours of Chinese, Malay and Indian all mixed together. The secret behind the flavours lies in the combinations of dried shrimps, chili, curry powder and curry leaves to give this dish its distinct aroma.

049

This was probably the least favourite dish of the night. Its called Ikan Bakar which means burnt fish. The fish was .... not burnt.. haha. The sambal sauce was nice but it needs that carbonised effect on skin and meat and sauceeeeee to elevate the taste.

051

The kong pow squid was deep fried in batter and then stir fried with a great amount of heat and chilli. Well coated and I think it was the favourite dish amongst most of my friends that night.

032

The hot plate seafood tofu had a great mix of ingredients and yummy oyster sauce flavour. More tofu would have been nice.

030

The fibre of the night went to kai lan sauteed with tenderised beef. Can't really go wrong when its well fried with a good amount of garlic and oil.

038

The last item I got to eat was an umami packed plate of deep fried soft shell crab. Deep fried mince garlic, salt and pepper. yum yum.

I had plain rice but for 50p more, you can enjoy coconut rice (nasi lemak) or Chicken rice.

Not to forget, there's dessert as well. Honey dew sago, BOH BOH CHAR CHAR !!! and goreng pisang. Sadly I had to go for night shift.

It was a steal really. 7 dishes plus desserts and drinks (non alcoholic) for 20 pounds each.

With 4 players in the market now, the competition has grown and certainly represents the greater interest that the local population have for spicy, flavourful asian cuisine.

I hope these pictures are enough to tantalise your taste buds to warrant a trip down this evening. Afterall its Friday.

Company Lunch @ TMCC

Technically, my Dad's company. I was just there to free Load.

009

Prosperity Yu Sheng. I don't like this dish as a child. Honestly, raw veggies wasnt my thing when i was young. I can be thankful for the salad eating culture in UK for getting me interested in this very auspicious and luck bringing dish that folks pay too much for sometimes.

019

龍飛鳳舞. Deep fried chicken in Thai Style. Better than the one from CHina BLUE !!! ...
I couldn't figure out what the yellow bits were. They certainly were very tangy. Could be shredded preserved mangos .

023

年年有余. Hongkong style Garoupa. You got to love these Chinese descriptions. An this case, an abundance of excess year after year
The fish was pretty plump and tasty with the sauceeeee.

026

嘻哈大笑 . Poached Live prawns. Fresh and crunchy back lacking in the crustacean taste.
Still... I ate 6 pieces hahaa.

028

Braised EE Fu noodles. Reminds me of my flatmates who love this noodle dish so much. I don't think they missed much cos the version cooked by the cantonese restaurant with dried scallop is so much more tasty.

Who could forget this famous menu....
