Black Beauty and the Botak

Its freaking raining in Summer in Glasgow and scorching hot over here in Singapore... Whats with the weather. Thankfully... We've got some fruits to cool us down here. I am telling you 1 Cold coconut drink and 1 super chilled watermelon is all that is needed to bring down the heat. SUpER SHiOK!!

"Botak" is Malay for bald hence the name given to the coconut.. As for the water melon, its called a black beauty. I get the botak but what's with Black beauty? Interesting nomenclature...

Anyway I found a website with the description of the watermelon that I ate along with other weird and wonderful varieties of watermelons. The bowling ball look alike Round baby looks promising.

Bah Kut Teh @ Owen Road

Dad wanted to eat BKT and he particularly likes this place along Owen Road called Ah Heng Bah Kut Teh. Apparently, most BKT stores don't open on monday because there's no pork but Ah Heng is different and chooses to capitalise on this day. Wonder where he gets his pork from though lol.

Here's the Bah kut teh in a claypot. Not many places use claypot nowadays ya... and look ... canned mushrooms. The pork wasn't as good as expected today. Could it be because he got it from a different supplier on MOndays?. Anyway the ribs were chopped up and not in its curvy entity... Guess it makes for easier eating also but takes away the joy of chewing away the meat from the ribs like eating a drum stick.

Braised Pig Trotters (BPT) seem to pair along well with BKT. The other dish that goes with BKT is pig organ soup but we din order that today lol. It would probably have been consumed by my dad only. Anyway the BPT was fantastic. It got a good bath in a really fragrant garlic soy sauce broth. I thought it was better than the BKT lolol.

Preserved vegetables and you tiao make good accompaniments too. The you tiao was unfortunately almost finished before the soup even arrived lol. Guess we were quite hungry .

One thing that's unique about this place is that they offer a variety of steamed fish. I think that's one of the draw of this old institution. Its bound to attract lots of Teochew Ah hias to come and patronise the store la. We had half a red snapper head. The fish was very fresh but the natural taste of this fish ain't as sweet as some of the other species. At least it was fresh and once u pair it with some fermented bean sauce, it will be fine on the taste buds.

What is Bah Kut Teh without the Teh. lol.. We don't see many places offering self brewed chinese tea nowadays. So to find one here certainly brings back some authentic feel to how folks use to eat BKT. The boss has quite a few varieties of tea to choose from. You can even bring your own tea and leave it at the store if you come here often enough.

Firstly. wash the tea and soak it to soften it.

Pour away the first brew

Enjoy. Any guess why you put the toothpick in the spout?

Not a cheap meal but bao jia!...

Cheap and Satisfying @ Bedok 85

Bedok is kinda my 地盤 as I spent a significant portion of my life schooling here. There's always something nostalgic about coming back to this part of the country especially at night for supper !!!... What I really like about Bedok 85 are the prices and the variety of supper snacks/dishes. The prices haven't risen as much as alot of other places and that is a good thing but I can't say so much about preservation of taste.

Bah Chor Mee comes in 2 versions in Singapore. The dry version doused in a chilli and vinegar sauce or the rich soupy version. Bedok has apparently 10 soupy Bah chor mee stalls and I know only 5 of them. Wonder where the other 5 are located. Anyway, I don know what went wrong with the uncle or auntie today. She over-boiled the noodles and it was rather soggy. At least the broth was still quite umami.

Ah BBQ Chicken Wings... OK the flavours quite standard nowadays but who cares, everyone enjoys BBQ chicken wings yea. Its great for sharing too. Good time to show your generosity ;)

Fried Carrot Cake!!!. . So simple yet so tasty. I'll say again. The carrot here is white radish not your red carrot used in English Carrot cake.

Finally... Ah ball ling... Ah You can get these glutinous dumplings in Glasgow but the peanut soup is going to be tricky lol.. The green Ah ball lings are a new addition. Its green tea flavoured glutinous skin with a green tea flavour bean paste within. Quite yummy.

I ate 80% of these (ho ho ho.. *clutch my belly) and the total cost was only $$10 inclusive of a refreshing sugar cane juice. That's like 5 pounds... In Singlish....."where to find... you tell me??"

Procrastination with Kway Chap

I was contemplating a morning run yesterday after realising how I have been so nua over the last few months. Despite feeling rather tired, I went for a short run and some static exercises. That's the healthy bit until I decided to have Kway chap for Breakfast lolol.. My only saving grace was me telling Auntie not to give me the pig Skin!... *oink

Kway chap. BBCs.. is a platter of mix pork meat, innards, soy products and egg all stewed in a savory soy, cinnamon broth. This is often eaten with Kway teow (flat rice noodles) or rice along with lime chilli sauce as a dip. See ... we do have our form of haggis here as well.

For me, I tend to skip the innards lol. Never really had an affinity for them. More palatable items include the stewed pork, tofu, tao pok and egg oh yum yum.. I used to bite off the top bits of fat on the pork as a child cos I thought of them as being really unhealthy lol.. Nowadays lolol Its a different story but I do eat in moderation.

Tea Time @ Coffee Club

Met up with LP for a quick catch up at Coffee Club. Ironically, we din't have tea nor coffee but ended up with desserts instead. She had meringue coated ice cream which was quite nice but the meringue was too sweet.

I had..... Mud Pie... Only the 2nd time I've had it from Coffee Club.

Its nice and yah so Sinful according to LP as she guiltily carves away my ice cream. I still like my NYDC mudpies better. Better quality ice cream and MUCH MUCH MORE VARIETY!!! with lots of COOl Drinks.

NYDC anyone?

Green Tea Soya Bean

The goodness of 2 drinks in one carton..

Ahh.. Bliss...
